During a deadly diphtheria outbreak, teams of mushers and sled dogs relayed antitoxin across hundreds of miles of brutal winter terrain. Balto was part of Gunnar Kaasen's team that completed the final stage into Nome, and the resulting publicity transformed him into the public symbol of the entire relay and an enduring icon of canine courage.
